Although it’s been fantastic to carry on with our classes via Zoom during lockdown, we know many of our participants have missed learning in a studio and missed the social and friendship aspect of visiting The Garage.
That’s why we’ve been busy behind the scenes, getting ready to open our studios from 14 September in line with government guidelines.
Katie Snell, our General Manager, said: “The Garage just isn’t The Garage without the vibrancy our participants bring to the building. Although things will feel massively different for our autumn term, at its heart it will be the classes programme people have come to know and love and we’re incredibly excited to restart it all this September.”
The safety of our participants, tutors and full staff team is a top priority.
She added: “With this in mind, we’ve restricted class numbers relative to government guidance for dance studios and staggered class start times to avoid large groups gathering in shared spaces.
“Around the building we have introduced hand sanitiser stations and each studio will have its own cleaning equipment for participants to wipe down anything they wish to use. We’ve increased our cleaning contract to have multiple visits throughout the day and are monitoring the government guidelines daily to ensure we are consistently compliant.”
There will also be clear distancing markers on every studio floor and wipeable containers for each participant to store their belongings in.
Beth Norman, The Garage’s Learning Manager, is also thrilled to be bringing back the majority of our class programme.
She said: “We’ve had to adapt our sessions to ensure they adhere to Covid-19, but the main thing is that participants can come back to our studios and immerse themselves in the performing arts again while staying safe. We’ve also got some exciting new classes launching this term.”
These include a new range of baby and toddler classes, starting with My First Storytime for 1-2 years olds leading on to My First Ballet, My First Dance, My First Music and My First Drama for 2-3 year olds. Themed sessions and a Christmas party and performance are also in the pipeline. Keep an eye out for our new fitness sessions, which you can pay weekly for at a drop-in rate.
Beth added: “We’re also excited to be starting a Saturday Dance Academy. This will give 4-16 year olds the chance to take classes in ballet and contemporary, tap, street and commercial. There will be an opportunity to take graded dance exams and take part in performances.
“It’s absolutely amazing that from closing our doors in March, we can now throw them open again to welcome back participants old and new and launch some wonderful new sessions.
“We’ve had a fantastic response and start to the My First classes with toddlers really enjoying experiencing dance, music, storytelling and drama in a fun and interactive way. For some children, due to lockdown, this is their first experience of performing arts. Each week has a different theme and adventure. So far this term we’ve explored nursery rhymes, weather, space and an autumn woodland walk.”
